Here’s everything you need to know about all the different competitions you can enter at the 2020 South Island Swing Championships.
Here’s some key terminology you’ll need along the way:
All-Skate: All the competing dancers/pairs find somewhere on the dancefloor and dance at the same time as each other.
Shines: Each pair/dancer takes the floor and dances by themselves to a part of a song (for instance, 8x8s) before the next pair/dancer takes the floor.
Showcases are pre-prepared routines to a song and in a dance style of the dancers’ choosing. The song must be no longer than 3:30, and should be sent to the DJ before the day of the event. These will take place on Saturday evening, not on Sunday.
Mix and Match
Mix and Match is the competition celebration of social dancing. Dancers are paired together at random, and it’s up to you as a pair to throw down the best shapes you can think of.
Due to numbers of attendees, we have grouped everyone together into one competition.
Novice dancers: While dancing in the main competition, the judges will also be awarding certificates to the strongest novice dancers. If you entered into the novice mix and match, you will be eligible for this award!
There will be three heats for mix and match. Due to a larger number of follower entrants, there will be two heats for followers and one heat for leaders.
Heat One: This heat will adjudicate the leaders who will make it through to the final. Dancers are paired at random, and dance all-skate for approx 1:30. Dancers are jumbled up with new partners a further 1-2 times. Dancers are judged individually across their dances, and the judges choose the best leads to make it through to the finals.
Heats Two and Three: These heats follow the same format and decide which followers make it into the final.
Finals: Dancers are paired at random before the competition. They stay in this pair for the remainder of the competition, and are judged as a pair. The formal of the final is as follows: Short warm-up song (unjudged). Shines, with each pair taking the floor in turn. Final all-skate (judged).
The chance to show the world what you and your dance partner can do. Even aerials are permitted here. Dancers enter as a pair.
For those of you who registered without a partner, you have been paired randomly, at a first-come-first-paired basis and your partner can be found on the participants list. Find your partner on the Saturday evening and have a dance! There is a short waiting list for those still missing a dance partner.
There are no heats due to entrance numbers, so everyone makes it into the final! Format: Short warm-up song (unjudged). Shines, with each pair taking the floor in turn. Final all-skate (judged).
Your chance to dance by yourself, and be awesome. No heats. While you can dance solo to any tempo or style, expect this one to be danced to up-tempo swing. Short warm-up song (unjudged). The competition takes place entirely in all-skate fashion, with 2-3 judged songs.
Partnered blues competition. Dancers enter as a pair. Short warm-up song (unjudged). The competition takes place entirely in all-skate fashion, with 2-3 judged songs.Back to event
